Position Overview

This is a joint appointment Specialist Psychiatrist post within Tshwane District, Gauteng Department of Health, and the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.

The successful candidate will provide specialist mental health services within district facilities and contribute to academic training, teaching, and research activities at university level.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • MMED (Psych) or FC Psych (SA) qualification
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist
  • Appropriate experience as a Specialist Psychiatrist
  • Understanding of community psychiatry
  • Ability to supervise and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Valid driver’s licence

Previous academic involvement and research training will be an added advantage.

Skills and Knowledge

The ideal candidate should demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of relevant ethics, legislation, policies, guidelines, and regulations in line with Departmental and HPCSA standards
  • Good interpersonal and workplace relationship skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Computer literacy
  • Training and supervision skills

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Providing specialist mental health services at Primary Health Care level and district hospitals, including Odi and Jubilee Hospitals
  • Participating in general psychiatry services within the district as required
  • Designing and implementing community-based outpatient psychiatric services and outreach programmes
  • Organising and managing mental health clinical activities in an integrated and efficient manner
  • Supporting and collaborating with District Family Physicians and Primary Health Care practitioners
  • Facilitating intra- and inter-district referral pathways for mental health services
  • Assisting in the development of protocols and procedures across all levels of mental health care
  • Collaborating with non-health sectors regarding identification, care, treatment, and rehabilitation of people with mental illness
  • Monitoring and evaluating mental health services to improve quality of care and ensure compliance with policies and legislation

Academic and Research Responsibilities

The appointed specialist will also:

  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching under the Department of Psychiatry
  • Provide training to medical officers and other healthcare professionals
  • Conduct research and supervise research projects
  • Participate in district and university committees
  • Engage in general management and administrative duties appropriate to the post

An interest in further academic studies in psychiatry, such as pursuing a doctoral degree, is encouraged.
