Position Overview
This is a joint appointment post in Family Medicine in collaboration with the University of Pretoria and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, Division of Family Medicine.
The successful candidate will provide specialist clinical services within the district while leading academic training, research, and professional development initiatives. The role requires strong clinical management expertise and academic leadership capabilities.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Appropriate specialist qualification in Family Medicine: MPrax MED, MFAMMED, MCFP (SA), MMED or equivalent
- Registration certificate with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Specialist Family Physician
- Current annual HPCSA registration card
- At least 3 years’ experience after registration with HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Family Medicine
- Extensive knowledge of the South African District Health System and Primary Health Care (PHC) system
- Significant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience
- Experience supervising postgraduate research
The candidate must demonstrate strong clinical management skills and academic leadership qualities.
Key Responsibilities
The appointed Specialist Family Physician will be responsible for:
- Coordinating comprehensive medical services within the district
- Implementing quality improvement processes to address patient care and health system challenges
- Ensuring performance management implementation for Family Physicians, medical officers, registrars, and other subordinates
- Participating in District Management structures and supporting implementation of the District Health Plan
- Providing leadership in the implementation of PHC re-engineering, School Health, and Ward-Based PHC Outreach Teams
- Coordinating and rolling out structured continuous professional development programmes for clinicians
Clinical and Operational Duties
The successful candidate will:
- Render specialist Family Medicine services across district healthcare facilities
- Rotate through all service points within the district
- Participate in commuted overtime as required
- Contribute to the establishment and oversight of clinical protocols
- Develop, coordinate, and supervise the six-month Family Medicine rotation for Registrars across the district
Academic and Research Responsibilities
The role includes strong academic involvement, including:
- Leading and actively participating in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training programmes
- Supervising postgraduate research
- Conducting high-quality primary care research
- Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed publications
- Participating in university and district-related committees
- Performing additional duties as determined by the Chief Director
